2023 has been a transformative year for photography, with numerous developments and events that have significantly shaped the industry. Here’s an in-depth review of some of the key highlights:

Gear and Tech

Sony and Fujifilm had noteworthy years with their E-Mount and GF Glass series respectively. Sony released new E-Mount cameras and lenses, which have been well-received by the photography community for their advanced features and superior image quality. These new releases have further solidified Sony’s position as a leading brand in the photography industry. There is also the fact that Sony did indeed changed the marked with its new cameras, one for each segment, from APS-C to professional with the unique Sony A9 III.

On the other hand, Fujifilm had a big year for GF Glass but a relatively quiet one for the X Series. The medium-format GFX System grew by one camera and three lenses this year¹, indicating a strategic focus on the medium-format market. This move by Fujifilm underscores the growing interest in medium-format photography among professionals and enthusiasts alike.

In an exciting development, a Holy Grail Nikon 13mm f/5.6 lens was sold for a whopping $50,000. This rare lens, known for its exceptional wide-angle capabilities, was a hot topic among photography enthusiasts. The sale of this lens highlights the enduring appeal of vintage photography gear among collectors and photographers.

Competitions and Events

The National Astrophotography Competition in India showcased some incredible celestial images. This competition aimed to promote astrophotography in India and has borne out some incredible images. The stunning photographs captured the beauty of the cosmos, inspiring both professional and amateur photographers. The success of this competition underscores the growing popularity of astrophotography as a genre.

The DPG Masters Underwater Imaging Competition also announced its winners, with a picture of a juvenile blackfish hitching a ride on a jellyfish under the gaze of Mount Vesuvius taking home first place. This competition highlighted the beauty and diversity of underwater life, showcasing the unique challenges and rewards of underwater photography. The winning images from this competition have set new standards in underwater photography.

Industry Trends

Panasonic reorganised in response to the growth of the video content creation market. This move consolidated the Professional AV business and Panasonic Visual Co., Ltd. Panasonic’s reorganization reflects the increasing demand for high-quality video content and the company’s commitment to meeting this demand. This development underscores the growing convergence of photography and videography in the digital age.

Reviews and Opinions

There were several gear reviews, including a review of the Asus ProArt Station PD5 and the Nikon Z 600mm f/6.3 S. The Asus ProArt Station PD5, a machine designed for creative professionals, unfortunately, did not live up to expectations. On the other hand, the Nikon Z 600mm f/6.3 S lens was updated with full lab tests, including focus speed, sharpness, and chromatic aberration. These reviews provide valuable insights for photographers looking to invest in new gear.
